Coronation Street star Tristan Gemmill has defended co-star Sarah Harding.

The Girls Aloud beauty was axed from the soap after just four episodes some weeks back following negative feedback from fans.

However, the 48-year-old, who plays Tracy Barlow’s new man Robert Preston, has suggested that the public may have been too harsh on his TV wife.

“I got on very well with Sarah and found her delightful to work with – and I thought the criticism about her was unfair,” he told The Sun.

“She had a lot of emotion to get into a very short space of time, and I thought she made a good job of it.”

Tristan went on to reveal that since landing a role in Coronation Street earlier this year, he has been attracting more attention while out and about.

But apparently, the people stopping him believe he’s a lookalike rather than the real mccoy.

In fact, one passer-by recently advised him to look into cashing in on his resemblance to Corrie’s Robert Preston.

The star joked: “This lady came up to me and said, in a deep West Country accent, ‘I don’t know if you know, but there’s a man on Coronation Street that looks exactly like you. You could be a lookalike for him. There’s lots of money in that — you should look into it’. I said, ‘Thank you very much, I will go and watch Coronation Street and look!’”

Coronation Street is on ITV1 tonight at 8pm.
